The Parliament of Catalonia has approved a new measure that halves recreational sea urchin fishing in order to protect the species and ensure the sustainability of the marine environment. From Club Nàutic Estartit, we support initiatives that promote responsible coastal management and help maintain the balance between enjoying the sea and preserving its ecosystem.

New restrictions for sea urchin fishing
Under this new regulation, the number of sea urchins that recreational fishers can catch is reduced from 150 to 75 per day. The measure is adopted to protect the populations of this species, highly valued gastronomically, but which faces pressure in several areas of the Costa Brava. In addition, the limitation also aims to prevent conflicts with professional fishing, as licensed commercial fishers had expressed concern over excessive catches in the recreational sector.
Sea urchins play a key role in the ecological balance of the coastline, as they help maintain the health of rocky seabeds and seaweed meadows. This measure strengthens the protection of the species and promotes the recovery of populations in areas where signs of overexploitation had been detected. It is an action that is part of a broader strategy to preserve marine biodiversity and promote sustainable fishing.

Control and penalties for sea urchin fishing are being intensified
The new regulation also provides for stricter control and higher penalties for violations. Fines can reach up to 30,000€ in cases of fishing without a permit or illegal sale of sea urchins, a practice expressly prohibited in recreational fishing. In this way, the aim is to reduce pressure on marine resources and ensure that recreational fishing is carried out responsibly and respectfully toward the environment.
The Club is committed to the sustainability of the coastline
From Club Nàutic Estartit, we maintain a strong commitment to marine sustainability and the preservation of our natural environment. We promote conscious and respectful recreational fishing, emphasizing the importance of following good practices such as:
- Respect catch limits and closed seasons;
- Avoid collecting small sea urchins or fishing in sensitive areas;
- Do not sell or trade your catch, as recreational fishing is strictly for personal consumption;
- Always maintain a responsible and respectful attitude toward the marine environment.
These actions help maintain the richness of our coastline and ensure that future generations can also enjoy the sea. The limitation of recreational sea urchin fishing represents an opportunity to reflect on the sustainable use of marine resources.
