Sea kayaking is an increasingly popular sport and leisure activity along the Costa Brava and the entire Catalan coastline. L’Estartit is an ideal place to enjoy unique natural areas, explore hidden coves, and connect with the sea in an intimate way. However, this also comes with responsibilities. The Co-management Board of the Maritime Coastline of Baix Empordà, with the support of the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia, has developed a set of key recommendations for practicing kayaking in a mindful and civic manner.
Everyone ready for the adventure!
- Check the weather forecast, especially the wind and sea conditions.
- Plan your route according to your experience and the season.
- Bring basic safety equipment (life jacket, non-slip shoes, etc.).
- Have a communication system with coverage (mobile phone, VHF radio channel 16).
- Know the regulations of the marine protected areas where you are kayaking.

Respect for the environment
The Baix Empordà coastline is rich in biodiversity and fragile ecosystems. Here are some good environmental practices:
- Avoid swimming areas and use designated access channels to reach coves.
- Do not touch the rocks with your kayak and carry it carefully.
- Do not land on vegetation or other sensitive organisms.
- Do not feed wildlife; observe it silently and from a distance.
- Follow marked trails to avoid damaging dune systems.
- Try to collect any floating waste you find, especially plastics.

Courtesy and civility at sea
We share the sea with other users: swimmers, boats, fishermen… That’s why it’s important to:
- Land while taking up as little space as possible, preferably in unoccupied areas.
- Enjoy kayaking in silence, listening and observing.
- Never make a fire, under any circumstances.
