Course on Out-of-hospital Emergency Care in Aquatic Environments: knowledge, prevention and response

From April 24 to 26, we hosted at our port the practical sessions of the Course on Out-of-Hospital Emergency Care in Aquatic Environments.

In an environment with intense and diverse activity, especially during periods of high attendance, the risk of incidents requiring an immediate and coordinated medical response increases.

In this context, specialized training becomes an essential tool to improve patient care, reduce mortality and long-term consequences, and strengthen both safety and response capacity in the face of this type of emergency. It also helps to better understand the conditions of the environment and the associated risks.

Training designed to act quickly and effectively

Through a systematic, evidence-based approach oriented toward professional practice, participants worked on the skills needed for patient assessment and management, as well as rapid decision-making in a real-life simulated environment.

On Friday, practical exercises focused on basic and advanced life support aboard the Salvamar Lyra vessel of Salvament Marítim and the Cruz Roja inflatable boat. The transfer of an injured person from the Agents Rurals vessel to land was also practiced. In the afternoon, a hemorrhage control workshop was held, with special attention to those that may occur in aquatic environments due to vessels, often of great severity.

Saturday morning was dedicated to the care of injured divers and freedivers, and the afternoon to the treatment of cervical and spinal trauma in the water.

Finally, on Sunday, response protocols for drowning cases on the beach were practiced.

Commitment to training and safety

From the Club, we will continue to support training initiatives that strengthen safety and the continuous improvement of response protocols in the maritime environment. Investing in the preparation of professionals also means investing in a safer, more efficient port and coastline, better prepared to respond to any emergency.
