Christmas fairs and living nativity scenes to celebrate the festive season

During the month of December, many towns and cities in Catalonia transform themselves for the Christmas festivities, with fairs, markets, light shows and the emblematic live nativity scenes that thrill young and old alike. These staged events, with their characteristic actors and unique heritage settings, create a special atmosphere that allows the public to immerse themselves in history. As well as the nativity scenes, there are also activities such as Caga Tió, concerts and bingo. It’s a time full of magic, tradition and Christmas spirit.

Christmas holidays in Catalonia: a special family calendar

Christmas celebrations in Catalonia begin on Christmas Eve (24 December), when children take part in the Caga Tió, a tradition full of joy. On Christmas Day (25 December), families gather around a traditional meal, and on Saint Esteve’s Day (26 December), cannelloni is the order of the day. New Year’s Eve (31 December) marks the end of the year with the twelve grapes. Finally, the Cabalgatas and Three Wise Men’s Day (5 and 6 January) close the cycle with magic and the traditional ‘roscón de Reyes’ (Three Wise Men’s cake).
