2024 Spanish Championship at Club Nàutic El Campello

From September 12 to 15, the Club Nàutic El Campello hosted the 2024 Spanish Championship, a crucial event in the youth sailing calendar. This competition was decisive in selecting the members of the national team who will compete in the upcoming World and European Championships. The event brought together 30 young sailing talents over four challenging days with changing weather conditions.

The team of sailors from the Club Nàutic Estartit, represented by Joan Pla, Sara Ayats, Matteo Galindo, and Aina Artalejo, was supported by coach Oriol Piña. The four athletes arrived well-prepared after intense weeks of training, determined to showcase their potential against the other competitors.

The schedule of the 2024 Spanish Championship

The first day of the championship was dedicated exclusively to preliminary formalities, such as participant registrations and technical inspections of the boats. These measurements were necessary to ensure that all equipment complied with competition regulations. Additionally, it was an opportunity for the sailors to familiarize themselves with the specifics of the racing area.

The following three days were marked by highly variable weather, testing the sailors’ skills and responsiveness. The first day of racing began with moderate winds, ranging between 6 and 10 knots, allowing the initial races to take place under controlled conditions. However, the second day brought much stronger winds, with gusts reaching up to 25 knots. These conditions demanded refined technique and great focus to avoid mistakes during maneuvers.

The third day was the most challenging for the competitors, with winds constantly shifting in both direction and intensity. This unpredictability forced the sailors to adapt on the fly, continuously adjusting their strategies to stay competitive. These weather changes were a true test of resilience and skill for all participants.

The final day of racing offered more stable weather conditions, with winds ranging from 10 to 12 knots, allowing the competition to conclude without interruptions. Despite the intensity of the previous days, 11 out of the 12 planned races were completed, a very positive outcome for a championship marked by variable winds.

The 2024 Spanish Championship results

Among the participants, Sara Ayats delivered an outstanding performance. With a 9th place overall, she was crowned the Spanish Under-20 Women’s Champion and secured 3rd place in the overall women’s ranking. Matteo Galindo managed to achieve 11th place, while Joan Pla finished in 15th position. Aina Artalejo, after overcoming several challenging races, ended up in 24th place.

Preparation for future competitions

Following this success, the team is now looking ahead to upcoming competitions with the confidence of having overcome one of the most demanding challenges of the season. With the experience gained during this championship, the young athletes will continue training to establish themselves among the top youth sailors in the country.

The 2024 Spanish Championship not only set the course for future international competitions but also strengthened the bond between the team members and their coach. Perseverance and hard work were key elements of their success in this event, and the Club Nàutic Estartit team is determined to continue on this path to achieve new victories in the future.

This event has left a significant mark on the sporting careers of the participants, confirming that, beyond technical skills, adaptability and resilience are crucial for success in the world of sailing.
