The sea level rise is accelerating: what can we do from the coastline?

Over the past 30 years, the speed at which the sea level is rising has doubled. According to data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the current rate of this rise is 4.7 millimeters per year. This may seem small, but this steady increase has devastating medium- and long-term effects: from beach erosion to the flooding of coastal areas and key infrastructure.

Why is the sea level rising?

There are two main factors:

  1. The melting of glaciers and polar ice sheets: Global warming is causing more and more land ice to melt, which flows directly into the sea
  2. The thermal expansion of the oceans: As temperatures rise, water expands and takes up more space

Both processes are linked to the climate crisis caused by greenhouse gas emissions, the use of fossil fuels, and deforestation.

Direct impacts on the Costa Brava

These are the three main blocks to consider:

  • Port infrastructure (docks, ramps, mooring rings)
  • Coastal marine habitats and protected species
  • Nautical and tourism activities, which are essential economic drivers for the region

The role of Club Nàutic Estartit in the face of climate change

Club Nàutic Estartit is not standing idly by in the face of this challenge. For several years, it has been leading pioneering sustainability initiatives, following the ecoport model, a port committed to the environment.

Why is investing in sustainability so important?

Because taking care of our environment is not just an ethical obligation—it’s a matter of survival. Every action matters: picking up trash during a boat outing or choosing a port that relies on renewable energy are concrete steps.

Climate change is no longer a future prediction, it’s a reality we are experiencing today. And coastal areas like L’Estartit are on the front lines.

What can you do?

  • Inform and share: The more people know about the issue, the more of us there will be to demand solutions
  • Support environmentally friendly initiatives, such as those by Club Nàutic Estartit
  • Adopt responsible habits: Reduce plastic use, choose sustainable transportation, and consume water and energy wisely
  • Participate in environmental activities: beach clean-ups, marine volunteering, and climate change workshops

Sea level rise is one of the most urgent challenges of our time. But it is also an opportunity to take action. Club Nàutic Estartit demonstrates that it is possible to combine nautical tradition with a commitment to the planet. We need more ports, more businesses, and more people ready to join this movement.
