The Mamastrail team sponsored by the Club successfully completes Oncotrail 2024

Club Nàutic Estartit congratulates the Mamastrail team, a group of 12 women from l’Estartit, Torroella de Montgrí and Pals, who have successfully completed the Oncotrail 2024 race, a solidarity sporting event dedicated to raising funds for the fight against cancer.

The Oncotrail: A challenge for a charitable cause

The Oncotrail is an endurance race of 101.2 km starting and finishing in Palafrugell. Its aim is to raise funds for the Oncolliga Girona Foundation to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families. The circuit, which includes 4,073 metres of positive ascent and 4,103 metres of negative ascent, is a demanding challenge that tests the physical and mental strength of the participants.

This year, the total amount raised was €395,059.11, an impressive figure that will help fund essential projects such as psychosocial assistance, the rental of orthopaedic equipment and the acquisition of technology to improve treatment.

As of 2023, the application of the donations was as follows:

The commitment and preparation of the Mamastrail team

The Mamastrail team is made up of eight runners, three substitutes and a physiotherapist. For the past two years, they have been training twice a week on routes that combine uphill, downhill and flat, with distances of around 10 kilometres and gradients of up to 600 metres. In addition, they complement their training with strength and flexibility sessions at the gym to avoid injuries during the race.

This year, they had to overcome a setback two weeks before the Oncotrail, when one of the first members was injured, requiring a last-minute change. Despite this obstacle, the team maintained their discipline and managed to complete the race in an impressive time of 18 hours and 20 minutes.

A privileged setting and profound values

The Mamastrail team trains in the spectacular surroundings of the Natural Park, often in the Montgrí area and the coves of Estartit, where they are always accompanied by views of the Medes Islands and the harbour. This unique landscape of the Costa Brava is a source of inspiration for the members, who consider themselves women of the sea and feel a strong connection with nature. This connection is reflected in their equipment, designed in the colours blue and coral, which represent the tones of the sea.

The testimonies of the team members show how each one experiences the Oncotrail in a unique way. For example, Gloria sees it as a challenge that excites her and makes her improve on a personal level, while Maite highlights the connection with the team as one of the key elements that make this experience unforgettable. Nuria emphasises solidarity and self-improvement, while Lidia recalls the emotional bond that the race creates with teammates.

For some members, the Oncotrail is more than a sporting challenge; it is a way to honour their loved ones. For example, Anna explains how the ‘bitxo’, as she calls the cancer, took away a very important part of her life, her father, a fact that gives the race a special meaning.

From Club Nàutic Estartit, we congratulate the Mamastrail team for their dedication, effort and commitment to such a noble cause. They represent the values of solidarity, teamwork and self-improvement, and we are very proud of their success at Oncotrail 2024.
