{"id":61433,"date":"2025-11-17T12:57:40","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T10:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnestartit.com\/?p=61433"},"modified":"2025-11-18T21:39:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T19:39:19","slug":"we-continue-creating-life-in-the-port-with-the-lbus-biodiversity-biomass-and-carbon-sequestration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.cnestartit.com\/en\/we-continue-creating-life-in-the-port-with-the-lbus-biodiversity-biomass-and-carbon-sequestration\/","title":{"rendered":"We continue creating life in the port with the LBUs: biodiversity, biomass, and carbon sequestration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanecostructures.com\/results\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/oceanecostructures.com\/results\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ocean Ecostructures<\/a><\/strong> project, present in our port, aims to promote <strong>marine biodiversity<\/strong> and improve the <strong>ecological functionality<\/strong> of port environments through nature-based solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The project uses <strong><em>Life-Boosting Units (LBUs)<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>biotechnological structures<\/strong> designed to promote the colonization of marine species and <strong>stimulate the creation of submerged habitats.<\/strong> These units act as active ecological supports, where algae, invertebrates, and fish establish themselves, contributing to enriching local marine life. The increase is particularly notable in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Central Pier: +128% (41 species vs. 18 species)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Entrance: +95% (37 species vs. 19 species)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garb\u00ed Pier: +43% (20 species vs. 14 species)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding fish specifically, the presence of juveniles and five commercially important species was recorded, suggesting that <strong>the LBUs function as breeding and refuge areas.<\/strong> This information is key to understanding how these systems contribute to restoring ecological balance and promoting sustainable fisheries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biomass: an average increase of 133%<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The total biomass recorded in the LBUs reaches 111 kg, compared to 47.5 kg on the control wall. The presence of phototrophic species (algae) and suspension-feeding species (sponges, bryozoans, and ascidians) enhances CO\u2082 sequestration and contributes to better oxygenation of the environment. The recorded environmental values, pH 8.3, dissolved oxygen 7.14 mg\/L, and 96% saturation<strong>, indicate a stable and healthy ecosystem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ecological interpretation of the results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis of trophic groups shows a functionally balanced community, with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>53% suspension feeders: filterers that improve water quality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18% phototrophs: primary producers that generate biomass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>16% carnivores: natural regulators of the food chain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This combination strengthens ecological complexity and enhances the resilience of marine ecosystems. <strong>The LBUs, therefore, not only increase the quantity of life but also its quality and functional stability.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These results position Life-Boosting Units as <strong>a key tool for the ecological restoration<\/strong> of port environments. Their impact is positive on biodiversity, biomass, and carbon sequestration, demonstrating that Ocean Ecostructures offers an effective and scalable solution to reverse the loss of coastal habitats.
