The beach of Griells in l\u2019Estartit<\/strong> has been the scene of an extraordinary event: a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta<\/em>) laid 105 eggs in the sand along our coastline. <\/strong><\/a>At Club N\u00e0utic Estartit<\/strong>, we celebrate this event as a milestone that highlights the ecological richness of our natural environment and reinforces the need to protect marine biodiversity. <\/strong>The presence of loggerhead turtles on our coastline is a positive indicator of environmental health<\/strong> and encourages us to continue working towards a more vibrant and sustainable sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediate protection and coordinated action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once the presence of the animal was confirmed, the area was quickly cordoned off to protect the turtle<\/strong> and avoid any disturbance. Local Police officers played a key role: they managed to hold the animal in optimal cool conditions until the arrival of specialized teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rural Agents<\/strong>, technicians from the Montgr\u00ed, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park<\/strong>, as well as researchers from the BETA Technological Center at the University of Vic, were mobilized<\/strong>. Veterinarians from the Marine Animal Recovery Center (CRAM)<\/strong> and technicians from the University of Barcelona<\/strong> also intervened to carry out a full health examination of the turtle, including an ultrasound, microchip placement, and satellite transmitter attachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientific monitoring and nest preservation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the device installed<\/strong>, it will be possible to monitor the turtle\u2019s movements via satellite<\/strong>, identifying key habitats and potential interactions with human activities such as fishing. This type of information is essential for marine biodiversity conservation projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The nest, which contained 105 eggs<\/strong>, will be moved approximately 50 meters inland, toward the dune near Ter Vell<\/strong>, in order to protect it from potential storm surges and ensure the safety of both the eggs and beachgoers. Part of the eggs will be kept in an incubator<\/strong> to maximize reproductive success under different environmental conditions. The new nest will be monitored daily, with special attention to sand temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nesting in l\u2019Estartit is already the fourth recorded this summer on the Costa Brava<\/strong>, following those in l\u2019Escala, Sant Feliu de Gu\u00edxols, and Platja d\u2019Aro. Across Catalonia, ten nests have already been documented in total<\/strong>, equaling the record set in 2023, according to data from the BETA Technological Center. <\/strong>Everything indicates that this season will set a new record for loggerhead turtle reproductive activity along our coastline. <\/strong>Hatchlings are expected to emerge between mid and late September, after an incubation period of around 60 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local Police and wildlife protection teams<\/strong> remind the public of the importance of not approaching or disturbing sea turtles, especially if a potential nest is spotted.
